*

cat sang child for a day,
as he's buzzin' on home in the rain

then when god saved the queen,
the slick, oily road stole his machine

now we laugh indoors
though tires squeeled and engine roared

and the passenger side
was opened wide

but we all turned out alright

J.D.'s Apple

So I said,
     "Is that apple tasty?
     Does it seem to satisfy?
Does it require anything beside itself
to keep your mouth from staying dry?"

And he said,
    "No.
     On its own,
     it's beautiful to hold,
and when my tongue needs something sweet,
     it's savory indeed!"

And I said,
     "So it's beautiful, delectable,
and good for all to see,
so what's the point of bringing up
an apple between you and me?"

And he said,
     "I don't know."

And I said,
"Oh I think you do - the meaning's true.
The apple, friend, is me and you,
and all the doubt they put us through
doesn't change what we are or what we do.
See if there's no god, or if there is,
an apple's taste remains my bliss.
And so it is with all you see -
     every person, everything.
Worth, and meaning all the time:
theirs, and yours, and ours, and mine."
